Title:Murberget's Music Archive
Alternative Title:Murbergets Musikarkiv
Description:This collection description concerns only the music related material at Murberget, but here is a general description of the museum: At Murberget, Västernorrland County Museum, old is contrasted with new. History is mixed with modern and contemporary art, handicrafts, film and music. The museum has large collections of objects and photographs. In the storehouse there are for example: a large collection of peasant furniture, one of the country’s largest collections of old rifles, painted sculptures from the Middle Ages, ancient relics, textiles, musical instruments and Sami handicrafts. Please get in touch with us if you would like to know more about our collections.
Description:The Sound collection at Murberget was active compiled and organized between the years 1986 and 2003. It was done within the work of Murbergets music-archive. The documentations were based on musicians and folk-musicians with musical roots in local traditions, their music expressions as well as their tellings about social and environmental connections and traditions.
Description:The sound collection was built through different collecting- and documentation-projects as well as school- and exhibition-projects. It was based on recorded music and interviews. Old private recordings were copied as well as recordings from the county stored at national institutions. Everything was put together in different compilations within the Sound collection in the Music archive.
Description:The sound material consists of more than 2,000 hours and was recorded through the museums own projects, but also (as said) copies of recordings made by private person and/or owned by other institutions. There are commercial recordings on phonograph cylinders as well as on cassettes, vinyl records and CDs. Other sound media among all are various music boxes.
Description:The recordings under the management of Murberget are mostly analogous tapes until 1989. Then the digital audio tapes were used as medium for recordings - even for the listening copies and backup copies.
Description:During the years 2003 to 2008 there was a passive period in the work of the Sound collections, but when the sound art-project “Ljudlabyrint” started together with USIT (urban sound institute) 2008, the museum again put focus on sound collecting activities, but now in a direction to sound in the whole, sound-memories, sound-awareness, sound art and so on.
Description:From the year 2008 the museum is active in sound collecting and sound producing activities. The hard question of sound storing is of course in focus, because of the use of new media.
