Description:Ta Jana z Velké Ohrady vol. 1 - From midnight till three Original chanson from the outskirts of Prague. by Ondřej Bezr; Reflex 2/2000 The four piece band Ta Jana Z Velké Ohrady has, since its establishment in 1996, completely changed its audience. They first started their career with the folk music audience even though they have never had an acoustic guitar. Their appearance was quite a surprise for the experts in this music genre (having received an award from the jury of the somehow notorious Porta festival) yet the orthodox folk listeners did not find their music easy to put up with... There is no dispute about who is the most dominant person in the band. The voice of the singer makes it clear from the start. Even though Ta Jana z Velké Ohrady presents itself as a band, the almost exclusive author of the repertoire and the leading voice of the band seem to support the theory of a solo singer backed by an accompanying band consisting of the piano (or the synth), the double bass and the drums. After all, there would be nothing wrong with it. On the contrary, the style called chanson is built on strong expressive personalities, otherwise it would just be ordinary pop. However hesitant Jana is in her press interviews to associate herself with the French classics of chanson, her music is not a far cry from them. It can fit into the vaguely defined category of "songs about something". Her voice conveys to the listener a broad spectrum of moods ranging from cold and inert to a consciously exaggerated screams turning a three-minute song into a short drama. Ta Jana tends to be theatrical, at times even hysterical (without being ridiculous or unnatural) or flagellant, using very strong words that can get across to the listener the pitiful feel of the moment, all features of the genre that is so often very intimate, distinctive and always very personal. The same is true about the music, mingling the "posh" hotel lounge with the music of the outskirts (soft drumming with brushes, honky-tonk piano or the sound of the accordion). However, the outskirts are of Prague. Small clubs and bars are not the Olympia in Paris. Is it because the "wrong" date or place of birth, that while the French chansoniers used to drive in limousines (and perhaps they still do), Jana, if she sticks to her direction, might forever walk?
