Title:FolkaLab Vol. 1
Genre:Electronic
Genre:Contemporary modal
Description:Folkalab was formed in 2008 in Palermo, Sicily. It began as a collaboration between Francesco Calabria, a contemporary DJ and cultural operator and Mario Crispi, a musician with an expertise in ancient woodwind instruments. Mario Crispi (a founding member of Agricantus) initially aimed to develop a creative cross-collaboration between artists, musicians and performers based in Palermo. The first season of this permanent laboratory' produced 25 hours of live performance with highly creative original extemporised music. This music is partially documented on this CD - the first volume in a planned series of releases. 150 musicians are joined in the project by artists from other disciplines such as DJs, visual artists, theatre performers and dancers. They work on this alongside ongoing work on their own personal artistic projects. Folkalab is also a meeting point for different generations of artists and an exchange between different cultures using new and old technologies. The 20 "conductors" who have directed the music during the LIVE performances have stimulated the development of improvisations based on a small number of precise rules, structures or guiding principles. FolkaLab aims to involve artists from other cities, countries and continents by using a method of "conduction" which is easily communicated to all, regardless of language or culture. FolkaLab promotes its activities to art directors, organisers and promoters supporting collective creativity within World Music or Contemporary Music International Festivals, Ambient installations and multimedia events.
